Keen cyclists and members of the general public alike, will no doubt be eagerly anticipating the chance to see one of the most famous cycling events here in the UK. The race runs from Saturday 5th July through to Sunday 27th covering 3656 km in 21 stages.
Le Grand Depart.
What’s really exciting is that this year ‘Le Grand Depart’ kicks off (or should that be wheels off?) in a new stage city – Leeds. The first stage on the 5th July heads off from Leeds up through Wharfedale, to Hawes at the top of Wensleydale, over the top past The Buttertubs and then down through Swaledale before moving on to Leyburn, Masham, Ripon and finishing for the day in Harrogate. The second day takes in more of Yorkshire, running from York down to Sheffield.
I came across a great clip this week giving you just a glimpse of some of scenery you can expect to see along the route.
It certainly encouraged me to join the millions of cycling fans expected to be cheering along the route and I’ve booked my accommodation today. If you’re not lucky enough to be there on the day perhaps you’ll follow the race on TV and plan a visit to enjoy the beauty of the Dales on one of its quieter days? Cyclists may want to try the route under their own leg power, but with a car it’s possible to see many of the top beauty spots of the North Yorkshire Dales in a day or two. Watch this space for tips on The Dales in a Day.
From an overnight in a hotel or bed and breakfast to a longer stay your own holiday cottage there are plenty of places to stay to in the region. Book your holiday home direct with owner on Direct Holiday Cottages and get the benefit of all their local knowledge included!
